Drugs to treat obesity have been around in the market for very long now. One of the most popular among such drugs is Phentermine diet pills. It had got its approval from FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 1959. Currently these pills are available in the market under two brand names: ‘Ionamin’ produced by Celltech and ‘Adipex’ produced by Gate Pharmaceuticals. Ionamin is said to have milder effects but lasts for long than Adipex which lasts for 10 to 12 hours only.
These pills are appetite suppressants belonging to the class of Phenethylamine and Amphetamine. They work by stimulating the part of the brain that consists of the hypothalamus. They use a constitutional isomer called Methamphetamine which stimulates the release of neurotransmitters like adrenalin, dopamine and noradrenalin. They further trigger the release of Norepinephrine which is a chemical messenger that signals the brain to reduce hunger or stop its hunger trigger. In simpler words it means that the brain is signaled to any response of fight or flight by stimulating the various neuron bundles due to which the body stops signaling for hunger. Phentermine also boosts metabolism and releases hormone called epinephrine that breaks down the stored fat cells.
